I can't put my finger on it, but something's gone awry with my fondness for indie rock. It's been a while since I heard something that I absolutely loved. I've liked a lot of things, like Surfer Blood, The Woods, Besnard Lakes, Local Natives, The Morning Benders, but I just can't get all the way into it. I don't know if it's me or that the music is changing. Maybe I'm just getting old.
One trend I notice is a tendency to put great effort into making a song sound 'different', sometimes (I think) at the expense of the song. An example would be "Ambling Alp" by Yeasayer. I know everyone loves it, but to me it just sounds overly busy. I actually think the song is pretty good, but I'd like to hear a stripped-down version of it. I'm a big fan of keeping things as simple as possible. In principle, I applaud the effort to try something new, but it still needs to 'work' to be good. I guess other people get tired of listening to a guy and an acoustic, or a bass-drums-guitar band, but I never will. Techno/electronica/dance music, for whatever reason, just doesn't do it for me.
That said, I can't wait for the new Fleet Foxes. I like what I've heard so far, but I'm looking forward to it so much that I might be disappointed. I'm kind of curious to hear the new Broken Bells that comes out Tuesday, but I'd still trade it for something new by the Shins. Oh, that's right, they don't really exist anymore.
